There's currently a jacket under development called the "No-Contact Jacket". One would ask what does the No-Contact Jacket do in the first place? This is a next step towards self-defense and protection as the company claims. The jacket is considered to be a new line of self-defense for the everyday civilians going around doing their own business.
Though the cities are relatively safe, there are bad areas that one is not supposed to go into due to the high rate of crime such as: rape, murder, robbery, drug dealing, etc. Those are things victims cannot prepare themselves one-hundred percent of the way. The small percentage is more than enough for the attackers to get their way. It's a rare chance but a chance that should not be overlooked ever.
You do not want to gamble with your life. Once you lose your life you cannot reclaim it. You die and you pass on into the afterlife if it does exist. Because of these types of crimes keep escalating, there comes a need for clothing that actually protects you. For this reason, the No-Contact Jacket is under development. Currently, it's not on sale yet and the price tag is unknown at the moment.
The No-Contact Jacket is electrically charged as it will send up to eighty-thousand volts of low-amperage electricity to anybody that tries to touch or grab you. Provided that they lay a hand on the coat. The jolt of electricity should interrupt the assailant(s) neurological impulses which will cause muscles to short circuit for the time being giving you more than enough time to escape.
How does the jacket emit electricity?
It's powered up by a 9-volt battery that you can buy at any store. As long you have a fresh 9-volt battery hooked up, the No-Contact Jacket should be powered up and ready to wear wherever you go.
Is the flow of electricity constant?
The flow of electricity isn't constant. There's a button inside the left sleeve when pressed will activate the 9V battery hooked up inside and send those eighty-thousand volts of electricity to the attacker(s). You press the button, let the jacket shock your attacker(s), release the button, and run off to another location.
What if the attacker(s) are wearing gloves?
The creators of the No-Contact Jacket say that the amount of voltage is more than enough to shock attackers that are wearing gloves. If you're wearing a pair of gloves, you can still get shocked by touching the No-Contact Jacket when activated.
Will I shock myself?
As long as the button isn't pressed, you'll be fine. If the button is pressed, do not touch it yourself. Do not touch the sleeves with your hands and do not touch your face with the sleeves either.
What happens when it rains or snows?
The No-Contact Jacket is made up of Teflon-coated nylon. The coating protects the jacket wear for rainy conditions. Good for you, bad for your attackers(s) since water and electricity do not mix. It will probably cause more damage for the unfortunate attackers.
Though the No-Contact Jacket seems to be good in theory, there are flaws in the jacket that shouldn't be overlooked. These flaws can be pretty dangerous especially for people that wear the No-Contact Jacket.
When the No-Contact Jacket is available on sale, they're only for women. There are none of these jackets available for males who are just as prone to be attacked as women. It's supposed to "aid" women in their struggle against violence. People get attacked and killed everyday regardless of gender.
That's the first flaw.
If you go out drinking, you'll be out of it if you don't have a high tolerance. After consuming alcohol, you lose all inhibition. You may accidentally press the button that activates the battery and accidentally touch your face with it. If that happens, the results will not be pretty.
That's the second flaw.
Most muggings and rapes are at gunpoint more than knifepoint. The No-Contact Jacket isn't bulletproof nor is it knifeproof. It's only effective when the attacker(s) try to grab you. If attacked by guns or knives, the No-Contact Jacket is useless.
That's the third flaw.
In the case of rapes, a good number of rapes are committed by people that the victims trust. Unless the victims are paranoid enough, chances are they won't be wearing the jacket. Due to the statistics of people that commit rapes, victims cannot fully prepare themselves for this traumatic experience. When it happens, they won't be able to grab for the jacket. The jacket is only useful when it's actually worn.
That's the fourth and biggest flaw.
It is unknown how much juice is going to be drained from the battery should the wearer press the button. You're not going to be sure how long the battery will last. If the battery runs out at an inopportune time, you're screwed. There's no nice way of saying it. That's a very important thing to be concerned about.
The biggest thing one has to think about is the costs of these No-Contact Jackets. Due to the technology used, these things can cost a pretty penny. Meaning not everybody will be able to have these jackets. It's possible that the No-Contact Jacket could cost at least one to two hundred dollars or more.
With the growing lower class and the shrinking middle class, the only people that would be able to buy it would be the small upper-middle class and upper class citizens. The No-Contact Jacket is a good idea but has some flaws that should be addressed and worked out.
It would be a great product if it was available to everybody regardless of gender and socioeconomics. Should that be the case, we can expect a more rapid decrease of rapes and possibly other crimes.
